Biography

Ashwin did his BA LLB (Hons) degree from National Law School of India University, Bengaluru from 1993 to 1998. In 2007, Ashwin received his Masters in Commercial Law from the University of Cambridge where he studied Jurisprudence, International Banking and Financial Law, Corporate Finance and International Commercial Litigation.

Ashwin has worked for a number of Tier-1 law firms and Tier-2 law firms in Mumbai, India including the erstwhile Amarchand & Mangaldas & Suresh A. Shroff & Co, Khaitan & Co where he made partner in 2010, SB Partners as Partner, Mansukhlal Hiralal & Co as Partner, Lakshmikumaran and Sridharan as Partner and Head of Corporate Advisory Services, Mumbai and ASA Legal Services LLP as Partner leading the practice at Mumbai.

Ashwin has over 20 years’ experience as a commercial lawyer. His experience spans most areas of corporate and commercial law including investments (both equity and debt, domestic and foreign), financing (structured, project and mezzanine), mergers & acquisitions, joint ventures and general corporate advisory. At Khaitan & Co, he was part of the team that advised marquee clients on private equity including Blackstone (investment in Gateway Rail Freight Limited and Jagran Prakashan Limited); Standard Chartered PE (proposed investment in Checkmate Security Limited); Credit Suisse India (investment in Shree Ganesh Jewellery Limited); SE Forge (investment by IDFC PE); the Suzlon Group (on various investments). He has also represented the family office of a prominent Indian banker in the investment by a domestic private equity firm in a drycleaning company. His latest investment related experience involved acting for the Modern Group (an existing shareholder) in the Series A round of investment by Actis in Crediwatch Analytics.

In addition to the banking and finance experience mentioned above, Ashwin has also advised NBFC’s on debenture investments in real estate companies. Ashwin’s has fairly basic litigation experience is basic before the National Company Law Tribunal. 

Ashwin has always had an affinity for the law and an eagerness to learn it’s nuances. Outside the law Ashwin enjoys reading, chess, movies, cooking and playing and following various sports including cricket, football, tennis, squash and swimming.
