Biography

Dr. Michael L. Valan is currently serving as an Associate Professor (Criminology) at Jindal Global Law School, O.P. Jindal Global University (Institution of Eminence). He holds a Master’s degree and Ph.D. in Criminology from the University of Madras, Tamil Nadu. 

During his research tenure, he worked as a Research Assistant on several projects sponsored by UNICEF and the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D). He has actively participated in numerous national and international conferences, seminars, and workshops, where he has presented academic papers. Notably, his first research paper was awarded Best Research Paper at the 36th All India Criminology Conference held in New Delhi.

Dr. Valan has published twenty research articles in reputed peer-reviewed journals. In recognition of his contributions to the field, he received the ISV Fellowship Award in 2016 from the Indian Society of Victimology. He has also represented India at academic events in Belgium, Poland, and Dubai.  His areas of expertise include Victimology, Policing, Juvenile Justice, and Crime Prevention, and he brings with him over 10 years of research and teaching experience.

Awarded Junior Research Fellowship by University Grant Commission, New Delhi, India to pursue Ph.D. research.

Awarded Best Research Paper for the Research Paper on “Child Marriage: Socio-Economic Status and the Dimensions of Victimization” presented in the 36th All India Conference of the Indian Society of Criminology, held on 15-17 February,2013, National Law University, New Delhi.

Awarded ISV Fellowship Award – 2016 in recognition of the significant contribution to the growth and development of the Indian Society of Victimology at the Fifth International and Ninth Biennial Conference of the Indian Society of Victimology held on 22 – 24 January, 2016, the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS), Kolkata.

Awarded Best Research Paper Presentation for the research paper on “Victimology of Sexual Harassment on Public Transportation: Evidence from India” presented in the First International Symposium on Victim Assistance, held on 25-26 February, Karunya Institute of Technology, Coimbatore.
