Our Success Stories

Case of denial of admission: Legal Aid Clinic had filed a writ petition in Allahabad High Court for violation of right to education of a 5 yr old child. He was denied admission in a private school under twenty-five percent quota provided under Right to Education Act, 2009. Allahabad High Court has passed the judgment in favour of the child. The father of the child is a manual labourer falling within the category of ‘economically weaker section’. Hon’ble High Court not only directed the school authorities to provide education to the child but has also by way of costs directed the school to provide free education to the child till class 12. Case of Domestic Violence: A security guard was a victim of domestic violence. She was considering separation and wanted to know what legal remedies are available to her, what are her rights, etc. LAC team provided counseling to her and informed her of the rights and how generally such cases move. As soon as her husband realised that she is going to take a legal recourse against him, the situation got improved and the matter was settled.

Case of Assault: A domestic help was being threatened and assaulted by her brother for ancestral property, pension of her deceased husband, etc. She approached LAC at a time when police had refused to register an FIR. LAC approached Asst. Chief Judicial Magistrate and ensured that an FIR against her brother is regisered. We helped her in drafting of complaints to Tehsildar and Superintendent of Police. We are also helping her in getting a free legal counsel appointed for the false case filled against her by her brother.

Case of Police Harrasment: A local resident of Sonipat was being harassed by Police considering him as a supect of his employer’s murder. Police demanded for money to drop charges against him. After continuous police harassment, he committed suicide. After trying for over a week, the family members of the deceased were able to get an FIR registered. LAC has offered representation through District Legal Service Authority. We are also in the process of drafting complaints to be filed with National Human Rights Commission and CM Window so that a proper investigation can take place.

Case of Sexual Violence and University’s inaction: We are constantly in touch with one of the students who was protesting (and was even named in the FIR). We have drafted complaints on behalf of the protesting students regarding multiple instances of sexual violence and university’s inaction. The same has been filed with National Human Rights Commission and National Commission for Women.

Case of Interim Maintenance: We have helped two women belonging to low-income household in getting interim maintenance in a domestic violence case. LAC not only counselled them but also ensured that a counsel is appointed by SLSA free of cost to represent two women in the Court.

Case of no cleaner: During our visit to Chhatera, we noticed there is not a single cleaner employed to ensure hygiene and sanitation. With this information with us, we have engaged in talks with the government and administration to improve the situation.

Right to Education: This team aims to educate, inform and promote “education as a right” to the public at large. Even though the act lays down sufficient provisions, that are needed for providing and attaining education as a right, there still exists some lapses and flaws in its implementation. The objective of the team is to bridge this parity by conducting empirical research and provide solutions through the means of various legal remedies.

Right to Healthcare: This team is working on moulding a particular village into a 'model' village in the fields of health. We have identified that condition of health care and Sub PHC in the village is in doldrums and rather disturbingly is completely abandoned in terms of any kind of medical supervision. The RTH team has tried to tackle access to healthcare through avenues of both research and fieldwork.

Right to Information: This team is directly involved in safeguarding and preserving constitutional values in the state. It tries to ensure transparency using RTIs.

POCSO: TThis team is set up with an aim to spread awareness among the children about sexual offences and about identification of offences. It organises workshops for students to make them aware about 'good touch' and 'bad touch' through various activities. We have a course designed for students to tell them about POCSO and various laws relating to the same.

Litigation Wing: This team takes up cases on pro-bono basis. They also assist in drafting, filling of petitions before respective courts.

What we Do

We organize legal literacy camps to make people aware about their rights, schemes by the government, etc. We also host conferences, workshops to promote Clinical legal education. The Clinic has separate groups focusing on basic rights such as right to education, right to health, right to information, etc.
