Born in Pune in 1951, Dadi Pudumjee's fascination with puppets began as a child playing with Pelham string puppet toys. He went on to study at the National Institute of Design and trained in puppetry under Meher Contractor at The Darpana Academy of Performing Arts in Ahmedabad. In 1976 he trained under Michael Meschke at the Marionette Theatre Institute, Stockholm. The world of puppetry opened up for Pudumjee as he performed with The Darpana Academy. His initial work included creating puppets and coordination for SITE - Satellite Instructional TV Experiment, Indian Space Applications Organization (ISRO), for the puppet serial HUN-HAN; guest director at Puppet Theatre Berlin in1979; and as puppet and drama pedagogue at Var Theatre Stockholm. In 1980 he returned to Delhi to set up and be the artistic director of the Sutradhar Puppet Theatre at the Shri Ram Center for Art and Culture, India's first modern puppet repertory company. In 1986 he formed his own group, The Ishaara Puppet Theatre. The Trust, in collaboration with UNESCO, worked with Salaam Baalak Trust to create a programme for the street youth in Delhi. Young persons were selected to train in puppetry and its uses, particularly in the awareness of HIV and substance addiction. The youuth in turn trained other young people, peer educators and NGOs in the puppet art form and its uses. Dadi has made puppets and curated various exhibitions in India and abroad- My Land, My People (Russia, 1987); Rup Pratirup-Man Mind and Mask (IGNCA, 1998).
